Lao Tzu claimed, "A
journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." If ever
there were a single step in the histor y
of this musical style, it began with Shadowfax, one of the earliest
and best-known groups responsible for effecting and evolving the momentum
of this genre.
Formed in 1972 by
saxophonist Chuck Greenberg, guitarist G. E. Stinson and bassist Phil
Maggini, Shadowfax's mix of eclecticism and accessibility has garnered
a devout following as diverse as its music. The group's
universal appeal comes largely from its inventive mixture of chamber
jazz, folk, and
world music, the result of which is an immediately recognizable sound
that takes its listeners on a journey across geographical boundaries.
From exotic landscapes to vivid dreamscapes and intricate soundscapes,
Shadowfax is truly in a category of its own.
